Kazakhtelecom to Cut 5,000 Office Jobs, AI to Replace Roles
Kazakhtelecom, Kazakhstan's largest telecom operator, is set to undergo a major workforce transformation, with plans to eliminate approximately 5,000 office positions within the next two to three years. This strategic shift, announced by the company's Chairman of the Management Board, Bagdat Musin, at the NEF 2026 forum, aims to streamline operations by leveraging artificial intelligence and automation.
AI to Automate Office Functions
Musin highlighted a current imbalance within the company's structure, where the number of administrative and managerial staff nearly equals that of frontline technical specialists. Out of the 8,000 office employees, 5,000 are slated for redundancy as their roles are expected to be taken over by AI-driven solutions. "We IT specialists know how to replace office work," Musin stated, emphasizing the company's commitment to integrating advanced technologies.
Skilled Laborers Poised for Growth
In contrast to the administrative cuts, Musin assured that the 8,000 technical specialists, including cable technicians and other hands-on roles, will remain with the company. He argued that these roles are crucial for creating tangible value and are not easily replicable by current technology. The chairman suggested that these skilled workers, who perform essential physical tasks, have a greater potential to become high earners in the evolving job market.
Shift in Value Perception
The announcement signals a departure from the traditional view that office-based work is inherently more prestigious. Musin asserted that the true value in business today is generated by individuals with practical skills that cannot be delegated to AI or robots. He envisions a future where team leaders and skilled laborers, who possess the expertise to manage and execute complex tasks, will be the primary beneficiaries of the company's success.
"The era when we used to scare children by saying 'if you don't study well, you'll end up a plumber or a road worker' is over," Musin remarked. He believes that fairness will prevail, with those who perform essential, hands-on work being recognized and rewarded accordingly.
This significant restructuring underscores Kazakhtelecom's proactive approach to embracing technological advancements and redefining its workforce for the future.
