Kyrgyzstan: Crackdown on Former National Security Chiefs Intensifies
Kyrgyzstan is witnessing a significant crackdown on former state officials, with a particular focus on high-ranking figures within the National Security Committee (KNB). This ongoing campaign has sparked considerable concern regarding the nation's political stability and legal landscape.
Key Figures Detained
Local media reports indicate that Timur Shabdanbekov, a former deputy chairman of the KNB, has been apprehended. Alongside him, six other KNB employees have been taken into custody on suspicion of abuse of power.
Abuse of Power Allegations
Sources within law enforcement agencies suggest that on April 13th, military prosecutors detained Bekzat Abdikaharov, the former deputy head of the State Property Management Agency. Also arrested were former deputy heads of KNB directorates in the Naryn region, including the heads of the cybercrime and anti-corruption departments.
Investigations Extend to Private Sector
Reports have also emerged regarding the detention of Akylbek Mamatov, the CEO of the Red Petroleum gas station network. Media outlets have highlighted potential connections between Mamatov's family and that of former KNB head Kamchybek Tashiev, noting that Mamatov's father served as Tashiev's deputy at the Kyrgyz Football Union.
Previous High-Profile Arrests
This wave of detentions follows the earlier arrest on April 13th of Daniyel Rysaliev, who served as the deputy chairman of the KNB and director of the Coordination Center for Ensuring Cybersecurity. Rysaliev is suspected of corruption. In connection with this case, the former head of the 6th department in the Issyk-Kul region and a current employee of the KNB central apparatus were also detained.
