Military Officers Sentenced in Kazakhstan After Cadet's Fatal Parachute Jump

A court in Aktobe has delivered a verdict in the tragic case of an 18-year-old cadet who died when his parachute failed to deploy during a training exercise. The incident occurred at the 'Aybin' airfield on July 15, 2025, around 6 AM.

Training Mishap Leads to Tragedy

Prior to boarding a Mi-8 helicopter for the jump, Major Nurzhan Aydenov was responsible for inspecting the parachute of second-year cadet Bakyt Asarbaev. However, court proceedings revealed a critical error by the jump supervisor.

The supervisor reportedly authorized a jump that violated safety regulations. Instead of adhering to standard procedures, which would have mandated a forced deployment system for this type of training, he allowed the cadet to practice with a manual parachute release. This decision proved fatal.

Details of the Fatal Jump

The cadets were training to parachute from an altitude of 800 meters. During this specific exercise, the primary parachute malfunctioned completely while the cadet was descending at approximately 140 kilometers per hour. The cadet, born in 2006, tragically lost his life at the scene.

Court Ruling and Sentencing

The Aktobe Garrison Military Court held an open trial for the case. Military personnel from the Military Institute of the Air Defense Forces and former colleagues of the accused were present.

Major Nurzhan Aydenov and Sergeant Zamanbek Tolegen were found guilty under Part 2 of Article 453 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, pertaining to 'Negligent attitude towards service'.

Judge Aidana Mambetkazyeva of the Aktobe Garrison Military Court announced the sentence: "Major Nurzhan Aydenov has been found guilty of committing a criminal offense and, under Part 2 of Article 453 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has been sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment. He is to serve his sentence in a minimum-security institution. A decision has been made to detain him immediately from house arrest."

Sergeant Zamanbek Tolegen received a sentence of 5 years imprisonment under the same article.

Compensation Awarded to Family

In addition to the prison sentences, the court partially granted the civil claim filed by the victim's family. The Ministry of Defense has been ordered to pay 20 million tenge in moral damages to the deceased cadet's family.
