Moldova has officially declared its intention to withdraw from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), marking a significant shift in the nation's foreign policy and economic orientation. The decision was formally announced by the country's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popșoi.

Withdrawal Timeline and Process

According to Minister Popșoi, Moldova's full withdrawal from CIS membership will take effect on April 8, 2027. This process adheres to international legal norms, with the official notice having been sent to the organization's secretariat. The withdrawal becomes legally binding 12 months after this notification.

Reasons for Departure

The Moldovan government has indicated that the country has largely disengaged from CIS political, social, and cultural events in recent years. Continued Economic Ties

Despite the full withdrawal from the CIS, Moldova plans to continue participating in certain economic agreements established within the CIS framework. Minister Popșoi drew a parallel with Georgia's experience, which maintained participation in some economic accords after its own withdrawal from the CIS. Broader Geopolitical Alignment

Previously, Moldova had already ceased participating in meetings of the CIS and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).
