OpenAI CEO Predicts Superintelligence by 2028, Cites India's AI Growth
Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has put forth a bold prediction: the first versions of true superintelligence could emerge in the coming years. He estimates that by the end of 2028, a substantial portion of global intellectual capacity might be concentrated within data centers.
AI's Rapid Evolution from Schoolwork to Research
Altman noted the dramatic acceleration in technological development over the past year. While artificial intelligence systems previously struggled with basic school assignments, they are now capable of tackling complex research-level problems and achieving new breakthroughs in fields like theoretical physics.
Looking ahead, the OpenAI chief envisions superintelligence surpassing human capabilities in various domains. He anticipates that future superintelligent systems could manage large corporations more effectively than top executives and outperform leading scientists in certain specialized areas.
Shifting Perspective on India's AI Potential
Altman specifically praised India's advancements in the AI sector. While he was initially skeptical in 2023 about the country's ability to compete in developing foundational models, he now believes India is actively shaping the future of the field.
Currently, over 100 million people in India use ChatGPT weekly, and the country has become the fastest-growing market for OpenAI's Codex tool. This indicates a significant and rapidly expanding adoption of AI technologies within the nation.
Democratizing Technology and Global Oversight
However, Altman also voiced concerns about the potential risks of AI becoming overly concentrated in the hands of a single company or nation. As a possible solution, he proposed the creation of an international body, modeled after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), to oversee advanced AI systems.
He believes that while AI development can significantly expand human capabilities, it also carries the potential for increased surveillance. The ultimate outcome, he suggests, will depend on the regulatory models adopted.
Altman acknowledged the impact of these technologies on the labor market but expressed confidence that, in the long term, they will accelerate economic growth and make numerous services more accessible.
If Altman's predictions hold true, the coming years could represent a transformative era for the technology sector and beyond.
