South Korean Billionaire Profits from Hormuz Strait Closure
Amidst escalating tensions in the Middle East and the subsequent closure of the Strait of Hormuz, one individual has emerged as an unexpected beneficiary: South Korean billionaire Ga-Hyun Chung. His shipping company has experienced a dramatic increase in revenue from chartering vessels.
Strategic Shipping Investments Pay Off
Chung, the head of Sinokor, reportedly purchased six oil tankers and directed them towards the Persian Gulf just weeks before the strait's closure. As regional exports halted, oil storage facilities became overwhelmed. This situation allowed Chung's company to lease out its vessels at significantly higher rates for crude oil storage.
Record-Breaking Charter Rates
The daily charter rates for these tankers have reached up to $500,000, a tenfold increase compared to the previous year. This strategic move, while surprising to some in the market, has positioned Chung as one of the major profiteers from the current oil crisis, according to industry experts cited by Bloomberg.
Sinokor's Growing Influence
By the end of February, Sinokor was reported to be controlling approximately 150 supertankers, representing a substantial portion of the global tanker fleet. This significant control over shipping capacity has amplified the company's leverage in the current market conditions.
The Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is a critical chokepoint for global energy supplies, serving as the primary route for oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Persian Gulf nations. It accounts for roughly 20 percent of the world's total oil, oil products, and LNG supply, making any disruption there highly impactful on global markets.
Previous statements from Iran's new supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, had indicated a desire for the Strait of Hormuz to remain closed. Tehran has viewed the potential closure as a tool to exert pressure in its conflicts with the United States and Israel.
