Sixteen residents from the Zhetysu region faced unexpected difficulties when attempting to reclaim their money for flight tickets purchased for a wedding in Astana. The celebratory event was called off, and when the travelers tried to get refunds for their pre-booked airfare, they discovered a significant shortfall in the amount returned.

Partial Refunds Spark Consumer Outcry

The group had collectively purchased 16 airline tickets to Astana for the family gathering, spending a total of 765,248 tenge. However, due to unforeseen family circumstances, the wedding was canceled. The passengers decided to cancel their travel plans and requested refunds for their tickets a full 37 days before their scheduled departure.

Expectations were that they would receive a full refund or at least a substantial portion, minus minimal cancellation fees as per standard airline regulations. Instead, they were only reimbursed a mere 14,840 tenge, averaging just 927.5 tenge per ticket. This minimal return left the travelers dismayed.

Consumer Rights Department Steps In

Dissatisfied with the meager compensation, the residents turned to the Zhetysu Regional Department for Trade and Consumer Rights Protection for assistance. Specialists from the department investigated the situation and provided legal guidance to the affected individuals. They explained the consumer protection laws and helped the group prepare a pre-trial claim against the selling company and the airline, demanding a full refund.

Following the department's intervention, the issue was resolved out of court. Within two days, the consumers received the full 765,248 tenge they had originally paid for the tickets. Officials from the department noted that such situations are not uncommon and advised citizens to carefully review the terms and conditions of their tickets before making a purchase.

This incident highlights the importance of understanding fare rules and the role of consumer protection agencies in resolving disputes.
