76-Year-Old Kazakh Man Walks Over 3,000 km to Reach Paris
A remarkable journey has concluded in the heart of Europe, with 76-year-old Sarsenbai Kotyrashov arriving in Paris after walking over 3,000 kilometers from his home in Ulytau, Kazakhstan. His incredible feat took 53 days and has been hailed as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Kazakh people.
A European Adventure
This marks Kotyrashov's fourth expedition into Europe. His previous travels include a comprehensive tour of Kazakhstan, a walk through the Caucasus to Istanbul, and a journey from Altai through Mongolia to Beijing. This latest European trek, however, presented unique challenges.
Navigating Europe on foot required him to often use bicycle paths and unpaved roads due to strict highway regulations. Despite facing setbacks, including a broken suitcase cart, Kotyrashov remained undeterred in pursuing his goal.
Aiming for a Guinness World Record
Kotyrashov's primary ambition is to be recognized in the Guinness World Records as the oldest active long-distance walker, specifically for individuals over 75. To achieve this, he needs to cover a distance exceeding the Earth's equator, a total of 40,000 kilometers. To date, he has successfully walked 18,000 kilometers.
"Through my example, I want to show the whole world that Kazakhs are a people with strong willpower and resilience. Our ancestors were the first to master iron, work with metal, and study astronomy; they were the first to ride horses," Kotyrashov stated. "My goal is to enter the Guinness Book of Records as a pedestrian traveler over 75 years old. For this, it is necessary to cover a distance exceeding the length of the equator – that's 40,000 kilometers, and I have 18,000 kilometers so far. I believe it will be achieved."
Promoting Kazakh Culture
Upon his arrival in Paris, Kotyrashov was welcomed at the UNESCO headquarters, recognized for his role in promoting Kazakh culture. Representatives from the international organization lauded his exceptional achievement and expressed gratitude to the Permanent Delegation of Kazakhstan to UNESCO.
Upon returning home, Kotyrashov plans to continue his blacksmithing work, seek sponsors, and prepare for his next adventure. In 2027, he aims to embark on a journey across the United States, planning to walk through eight states.
