Astana Selects Location for Second Airport Amidst Growing Tourism
Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, is set to welcome a second airport, with a specific site now designated for its construction. This decision comes as city officials approved significant amendments to the capital's General Plan, pinpointing the most advantageous area for the new facility.
Strategic Location Chosen for New Air Hub
The expansion is driven by projections of increasing tourist arrivals. Experts sought a location that would offer convenience for travelers, easy access via train or the city's LRT system, and minimal disruption to bird migration patterns. After careful consideration, a site northwest of the city, towards the Shortandy settlement along the Astana-Kokshetau highway, emerged as the optimal choice.
This proposed area is situated approximately 48 kilometers from Astana's city limits and 73 kilometers from the "Nurly Zhol" train station. It is anticipated that with the introduction of dedicated aeroexpress trains, the journey from the station to the airport could take around 75-80 minutes.
Unanimous Support from City Deputies
Following a presentation by Altynbek Akhmetov, head of the Architecture Department, the amendments to the General Plan were discussed over several sessions. The deputies of the city's Maslikhat (local representative body) unanimously voted in favor of the proposed changes, solidifying the location for the future airport.
Previous Discussions on Airport Expansion
The possibility of constructing a new airport in Astana had been on the agenda previously. In December 2025, Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek mentioned that the city's master plan already included prospective sites for such a development. Earlier, on May 15, Yerlan Oteshev, a deputy mayor, indicated that several potential locations were under review.
