Astana's Diplomatic Town Faces Uncertain Future Amid Redevelopment Plans
The future of Astana's Diplomatic Town, known locally as Dipgorodok, remains uncertain, sparking significant concern among residents. Rumors of the area's demolition to make way for new construction are circulating widely on social media, fueling public apprehension.
What is Dipgorodok?
Dipgorodok, an unofficial name, is located on the left bank of Astana, primarily housing diplomats and foreign mission staff. Situated between Saraishyk and Konyayev streets, opposite the "Lazurny Kvartal" residential complex and near the Baiterek monument, the area is characterized by its lush greenery and diverse architectural styles.
A Beloved Green Space
The neighborhood boasts a tranquil alley with fountains and mature trees, making it a cherished spot for city residents to relax. However, parts of the alley's paving, including tiles and cobblestones, are in need of repair, hinting at the area's age.
Future Redevelopment Plans
According to the press service of "Astana Genplan," the city's master plan is currently under review at the directive of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan. A draft of the new plan has been prepared and is undergoing state examination.
The proposed new master plan designates the Dipgorodok area as a public-business zone. This suggests that in the future, the site could accommodate not only residential buildings but also offices, commercial facilities, institutions, and other infrastructure. While official confirmation of the area's complete demolition is pending, the likelihood of dense future construction is high.
Precedent in Astana
This situation echoes recent events in Astana's city center, where the old Zarechny settlement, located between the "Mangilik El" arch and the "Sfera Park" elite residential complex, was demolished. Residents reported being given mere hours to vacate their homes and offered sums insufficient for purchasing new apartments. They claim the land was cleared for the construction of another residential complex under the guise of state needs.
