Astana's LRT Set to Launch: Passenger Service Expected in Weeks
Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek has announced that the city's Light Rail Transit (LRT) system is on the verge of launching, with passenger transportation expected to commence in the coming weeks.
While a specific official opening date is yet to be confirmed, Kassymbek indicated that passenger services could begin within the next two to three weeks. This follows the successful completion of all necessary testing phases for the project.
LRT Testing and Operational Readiness
Mayor Kassymbek highlighted that the LRT's testing procedures have concluded successfully, with all 18 trains now operational. The trains are scheduled to run at intervals of 3.5 minutes, offering speeds double that of other modes of transport.
Key stations, including those serving "Abu Dhabi Plaza," "Botanical Garden," "Astana Arena," Mega, "Airport," and the new railway station, are ready. Work is ongoing to improve the areas surrounding these stations, with landscaping and road surfacing expected to be completed by the end of summer. Efforts are also focused on ensuring convenient pedestrian access to the stations.
Addressing Winter Conditions and Infrastructure Concerns
Addressing potential concerns about winter operations, the Mayor recalled that the LRT operated smoothly last winter, with snow cleared manually. To further prepare for the upcoming cold season, specialized snow-clearing equipment is being procured.
Regarding issues such as water accumulation and minor paint scuffing, Kassymbek clarified that the storm drainage system is now fully operational. Painting work will be completed once warmer weather permits.
Previous Milestones and Future Plans
Initial test runs for the LRT commenced on September 29, 2025, with projections that these tests would last at least six months. In March 2026, Kassymbek had previously suggested that passenger service might begin in the spring. At that time, the operating company CTS had outlined that train speeds would be between 40-50 km/h, the journey from "Nurly Zhol" station to the airport would take approximately 40 minutes, and train intervals would be 5-10 minutes.
Previously, a draft tariff for the LRT was released for public discussion. The proposal suggested a fare of 200 tenge, with free travel for eligible categories using an electronic transport card. However, this tariff has not yet been finalized.
