FIFA Introduces New Rules for 2026 World Cup to Speed Up Play
Football's governing body, FIFA, is set to introduce a series of new rules for the 2026 World Cup, hosted across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These changes are designed to improve the overall match experience by minimizing stoppages, increasing the pace of play, and imposing stricter penalties for unsportsmanlike conduct.
Stricter Discipline for Player Conduct
One of the most discussed changes prohibits players from covering their mouths or other clothing with their hands or other items during contentious or aggressive situations. Such actions could result in a red card, aiming to combat verbal abuse and discrimination on the field.
Addressing Team Protests
Players attempting to leave the field in protest of a referee's decision will be sent off. Furthermore, if a team is deemed responsible for causing a game stoppage, they could face a technical defeat.
New Measures Against Time-Wasting
Referees will be empowered to initiate a five-second count during throw-ins or when the ball goes out of play for a goal kick. Failure to restart play within this timeframe will result in the throw-in being awarded to the opposing team. A corner kick may be given for delaying a goal kick.
Changes to Substitution Procedures
Substituted players must leave the field within 10 seconds, using the nearest boundary line. If a player delays their exit, the incoming player can only enter the game when play stops again, at least one minute later.
Medical Assistance Protocols
If a player receives medical attention on the field, they must remain off the field for one minute after play resumes. Exceptions will be made for severe injuries, head trauma, goalkeeper injuries, and other exceptional circumstances.
Expanded VAR Capabilities
The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system will be expanded to intervene in cases of mistaken identity, incorrect second yellow card offenses, and fouls occurring before a corner kick or in other set-piece situations.
Mandatory Hydration Breaks
Matches at the World Cup will include mandatory three-minute hydration breaks in each half, expected to occur around the 22-minute mark of each period.
Goalkeeper Injury Rule Clarification
If a goalkeeper receives assistance on the field, neither team will be permitted to use this stoppage for tactical purposes.
These new regulations are anticipated to make the game faster, reduce time-wasting tactics, and improve player discipline throughout the tournament.
