Iran's 'Sole Survivor' Commander Under Investigation for Espionage
Ismail Haniyeh, the commander of Iran's elite Quds Force, who was once considered the sole surviving leader after a series of Israeli attacks claimed the lives of other high-ranking Iranian military officials, is now reportedly under investigation for espionage on behalf of Israel.
Past Survival Raises Suspicions
Haniyeh's repeated escapes from Israeli strikes have fueled speculation about his potential involvement with Israeli intelligence. The circumstances surrounding his survival have led to serious questions about his loyalty.
Mossad Denies Involvement
Israel's intelligence agency, Mossad, has officially denied any connection to Haniyeh or the allegations that he is one of their agents. Despite these denials, Iranian authorities have continued their investigation into the Quds Force commander.
Haniyeh's Influence and Recent Silence
While the Quds Force has seen its influence wane in recent years, Haniyeh's position remains significant. Unlike other Iranian officials, such as Supreme National Security Council Secretary Ali Larijani and Army Commander Amir Hatami, who have openly criticized the U.S. and Israel, Haniyeh has remained largely out of the public eye since the passing of Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
This situation echoes past claims, including those made by former Iranian President Ahmadinejad, who alleged that the head of a secret unit tasked with confronting Israel was revealed to be a Mossad agent. Lebanese analyst Qassem Rumollah has also stated that Israeli spies are present in various sectors within Iran, including high levels of government.
There are unconfirmed reports suggesting that Iranian authorities have already punished and detained Haniyeh, though these claims have not yet been verified.
