Judge Who Sentenced Chelah to Life Imprisonment Removed from Post

Yerbol Akhmetzhanov, the former chairman of the Zhambyl Regional Court, has been dismissed from his post. The Supreme Judicial Council reviewed his candidacy and made this decision.

Akhmetzhanov's Judicial Career

Akhmetzhanov had been leading the Zhambyl Regional Court since 2020. Prior to this, he held various positions within military courts, including the Almaty Garrison Military Court and the Military Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The Chelah Case and Public Scrutiny

The public is largely familiar with Yerbol Akhmetzhanov due to the sentence he issued in 2012 concerning Vladislav Chelah. At that time, Akhmetzhanov found Chelah guilty of the deaths of 15 people at the "Arkan-Kergen" border post and sentenced him to life imprisonment in a special regime colony.

Additionally, last year, information circulated and was discussed by the public regarding Akhmetzhanov's anniversary celebration, where local officials reportedly arrived at a restaurant using official vehicles.

Potential Successor

Sources suggest that Yerlan Kosmuratov may be appointed as the new chairman of the Zhambyl Regional Court. He currently serves as a judge of the Supreme Court.
