Kazakhstan: Former Deputy Governor's Sentence Changed to Restricted Freedom
A court in Kazakhstan has modified the sentence of former Atyrau region deputy governor Bakytgul Khamenova, changing her remaining prison term to restricted freedom.
The decision came after the expiration of a previous deferral granted due to her having a young child. Initially, her sentence was postponed for three years.
Review of Sentence Deferral
The №2 Court of Atyrau considered the completion of the deferral period for Khamenova's sentence. According to the probation service, Khamenova has adhered to societal norms, avoided administrative offenses, and fulfilled her parental responsibilities during this time.
Taking these factors into account, the court approved her request. The unserved portion of her sentence has been replaced with 7 years of restricted freedom, along with probationary supervision for the same duration.
Original Conviction
Khamenova was originally found guilty on November 15, 2022, of accepting a bribe under Article 366, Part 3, Clause 2 of the Criminal Code. She was sentenced to 7 years in prison and a lifetime ban from holding public office.
However, the execution of her sentence was initially deferred for three years due to her young child.
Bribery Case Details
The case involved a bribe of 4.5 million tenge related to the implementation of a project to erect a monument to Abai Kunanbayev. The court also ordered the confiscation of property.
Khamenova maintained her innocence and appealed the verdict, but the original ruling was upheld.
Social Media Activity
Previously, a video of Khamenova at a festive event circulated on social media. The Prosecutor General's Office clarified that no laws were broken in this instance, as she had obtained permission from the probation service.
This development marks a significant shift in the legal proceedings against the former official.
