Kazakhstan's Dirtiest Air Cities Revealed: March 2024 Report

Air quality monitoring across 68 settlements in Kazakhstan during March has identified four cities with "very high" levels of pollution, raising significant environmental concerns.

Cities with the Poorest Air Quality

According to the latest data, Karaganda, Zhezkazgan, Satpayev, and Abay recorded the most polluted air in March. These cities were classified as having "very high" air pollution levels, indicating a critical environmental situation.

Areas with High Pollution Levels

In addition to the top four, nine other locations experienced "high" levels of air pollution. These include Atyrau, Oskemen, Ridder, Temirtau, Pavlodar, Turkistan, and the settlements of Shubarshy and Kyzylsai. This widespread pollution highlights the need for targeted environmental interventions.

Elevated Pollution in Major Cities

Major cities such as Astana, Almaty, Shymkent, Aktobe, Aktau, Semey, Taldykorgan, Petropavlovsk, and Taraz, along with 16 other settlements, registered "elevated" air pollution. This suggests that while not at the highest levels, the air quality in these areas requires attention and improvement measures.

March Pollution Statistics

Overall, March saw 32 instances of high air pollution recorded across the country. A significant portion of these, 19 instances, occurred specifically in Karaganda, underscoring its status as the most affected city.

It is noteworthy that Karaganda, Satpayev, and Abay also showed the worst air quality indicators in February, suggesting a persistent environmental challenge in these regions.
