World Boxing Allows Russian, Belarusian Athletes to Compete Under Neutral Status
The World Boxing International Boxing Federation has announced a significant policy shift, allowing athletes, coaches, and officials from Russia and Belarus to compete in its events under a neutral status. This decision was confirmed by the organization's press service.
New Regulations for Neutral Athletes
Under the new regulations, Russian and Belarusian participants will be permitted to enter international competitions. However, they will be prohibited from displaying their national flags, wearing national attire, or using their anthems. Each individual will undergo a thorough vetting process.
AIN Status Explained
Competitors will not be allowed to use their country's flag or national federation logos during events. If an athlete competing under the 'AIN' (Individual Neutral Athlete) status wins a gold medal, their national anthem will not be played. Instead, the AIN logo will be used during the medal ceremony.
Furthermore, the attire of these boxers will feature the designation "AIN" instead of "RUS" or "BLR." Members of AIN delegations are also forbidden from wearing any items bearing their country's flag or logo during official proceedings, including registration, weigh-ins, or technical meetings.
Alignment with International Standards
This procedural change was approved by the World Boxing Executive Council and mirrors the approach adopted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
It is noteworthy that Gennadiy Golovkin is set to assume the presidency of World Boxing starting November 23, 2025.
This development comes as the international sports community continues to navigate the complexities of athlete participation amid geopolitical tensions.
