Almaty-Bishkek Highway to Expand to 8 Lanes to Boost Capacity

Kazakhstan is set to significantly upgrade one of its most heavily trafficked routes, the highway connecting Almaty and Bishkek. The vital road will be expanded from its current four lanes to a total of eight lanes, a move aimed at dramatically increasing its capacity and improving travel efficiency.

This decision comes in response to the road's high usage and numerous requests from drivers seeking better conditions. The expansion project is expected to alleviate congestion and shorten journey times on this crucial corridor.

Project Details and Timeline

According to KazAvtoZhol National Company JSC, the reconstruction will enhance the highway's throughput. The design and estimate documentation for this ambitious project was finalized last year and is currently undergoing state expert review. The plans include not only the widening of the road itself but also the installation of a central median, improved lighting, designated bus stops, and overhead pedestrian crossings.

While specific start dates for construction are pending the completion of the review process, plans for widening this route were previously announced in April 2025, with design work anticipated to conclude by the end of that year.

Significance of the Almaty-Bishkek Route

The Almaty-Bishkek highway has long been a critical artery for both local commuters and tourists traveling between Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan. Currently, a trip along this route takes approximately 4 to 5 hours. The anticipated completion of the expansion project is expected to substantially reduce this travel time, making journeys smoother and more predictable for all users.
