Astana's 'Bermuda Triangle': Life on the Isolated '804th Kilometer'

Journalists have revisited a remote district in Astana, known locally as the '804th Kilometer,' a neighborhood residents have nicknamed the 'Bermuda Triangle' due to the difficulties in accessing and exiting the area.

Isolated by Railways

The primary challenges for the '804th Kilometer' district stem from its isolation by railway lines. The sole access point is a railway crossing, which frequently closes when trains pass. This closure not only inconveniences residents but also poses a critical barrier for emergency services. Tragically, reports indicate that a woman previously died because an ambulance could not reach her in time due to this crossing.

Stagnant Issues Over Nine Years

Tengrinews.kz journalists previously visited the area in 2017 and again in 2023. Their recent return revealed that little has changed in the intervening nine years. Persistent problems include poor road conditions, a lack of centralized water supply, and general remoteness from the city's infrastructure.

Water Scarcity and Poor Quality

Residents continue to rely on a communal well for their water needs. This well is only replenished by special tankers once every two weeks. Many complain about the water's quality and insufficient supply. The difficulty of accessing the district, compounded by poor roads, makes it challenging for residents to transport water from the city themselves.

Deteriorating Roads and Abandoned Homes

The road conditions are described as extremely poor, lacking even gravel. As snow melts, the area becomes even more impassable. While residents attempt temporary fixes, these offer only short-term relief. The lack of accessibility has led some residents to move away, leaving some houses vacant and unsellable.

A Quiet, Yet Challenging, Existence

Despite the hardships, some residents prefer the quiet life in the 'Bermuda Triangle' over the hustle and bustle of the city, finding it more comfortable than urban living. However, the ongoing issues with water and roads remain significant concerns.

Unanswered Questions

Journalists have sent inquiries regarding these issues to Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (Kazakhstan Railways) and the Astana Mayor's Office but have yet to receive a response. The situation remains unresolved, leaving residents in a state of prolonged uncertainty.
