IATA Tightens Air Cargo Rules to Boost Passenger Safety

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has announced stricter regulations concerning the carriage of dangerous goods on passenger aircraft. These updated rules aim to significantly enhance the safety and security of both passengers and crew members during air travel.

New Restrictions on Dangerous Goods

Under IATA's revised 'Regulations Concerning the Carriage of Dangerous Goods,' many hazardous items are now prohibited in both checked and carry-on baggage. While some items may still be permitted under specific conditions, travelers will need to be more mindful of what they pack.

Personal Electronics and Medical Devices

Personal electronic devices such as phones, laptops, tablets, and cameras are generally allowed. Additionally, batteries ranging from 100 to 160 Watt-hours can be transported with airline approval. Medical devices like CPAP machines, inhalers, and insulin pumps (if worn on the body) are also permitted. Certain cosmetic items containing alcohol, such as hairspray and perfumes, along with non-flammable aerosols for sporting or domestic use (Class 2.2), are allowed, provided the total volume of liquids does not exceed 2 liters per person and individual items do not exceed 0.5 liters or kilograms. Aerosol valves must be protected to prevent accidental discharge.

Items Permitted Only in Carry-On Baggage

Power banks and spare batteries are strictly restricted to carry-on luggage only. Lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Watt-hours can be carried without limit, while those between 100 and 160 Watt-hours are limited to two per person. A single mercury thermometer (in its protective case) and one box of matches may also be carried, subject to airline approval.

Items Permitted Only in Checked Baggage

Sporting ammunition can be transported in checked baggage, with a limit of 5 kilograms per person, provided it is in a strong, locked container and with prior airline agreement. Alcoholic beverages with an alcohol content between 24% and 70% are permitted in checked baggage, up to 5 liters per person, and must be in original factory packaging.
