Kazakhstan Man Jailed for Illegal Crypto Mining, Loses $400,000
A man in Kazakhstan's Karaganda region has been handed a one-year prison sentence and ordered to forfeit over 185 million tenge (approximately $400,000 USD) for engaging in illegal cryptocurrency mining. The court's decision comes after the individual operated a clandestine "digital asset mining" business without the necessary licenses.
Unlicensed Mining Operation Uncovered
The operation began in August 2021 when the man set up a secret mining farm. He acquired 156 units of mining equipment from Russia and installed them at his production facility. Through this setup, he successfully mined a significant amount of digital assets, accumulating 11.2 BTC and 90.2 LTC.
Cryptocurrency Converted to Fiat
To realize profits from his illicit venture, the individual utilized mining pools such as BinancePool and Litecoinpool.org. He then converted the mined cryptocurrency into tenge through P2P transactions. However, his activities were eventually discovered, leading to legal repercussions.
Legal Consequences and Asset Seizure
The court found the man guilty of operating without a license and sentenced him to one year of imprisonment. In addition to the jail time, all of his mining equipment was confiscated. The 185 million tenge in illicit gains was also seized and will be transferred to state revenue.
This case highlights the growing scrutiny and legal consequences faced by individuals involved in cryptocurrency mining without proper authorization in Kazakhstan.
