Kazakhstan Sees Dramatic Drop in Citizenship Renunciation Applications

The number of applications to renounce Kazakhstani citizenship has seen a significant decline, decreasing by about 40 times in recent years. This trend was highlighted during a recent commission meeting focused on citizenship matters.

Citizenship Commission Reviews Applications

Chaired by State Counselor Yerlan Karin, the commission convened to discuss issues related to both acquiring and renouncing citizenship. Following the meeting, recommendations were made to the Head of State regarding 305 individuals applying for Kazakhstani citizenship.

Decreased Renunciation Requests

Additionally, the commission recommended approving the renunciation of Kazakhstani citizenship for 43 individuals. This figure aligns with the observed downward trend in such requests over recent years.

Reasons for the Decline

State Counselor Karin noted that the number of individuals wishing to renounce their citizenship has fallen approximately 40-fold over the past eight years. For instance, while 1,700 applications were registered in 2019, this number dropped to 68 in 2025 and further to 43 this year.

This decrease is seen as a reflection of growing public confidence in the country's stable development and its socio-economic and political trajectory. Supporting this sentiment, a survey conducted by the Institute of Strategic Studies under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in April 2026 found that 84.4% of citizens believe the country is developing in the right direction.
