Kazakhstan to Host CSTO Joint Military Drills in 2026
Kazakhstan is set to be a key location for a series of joint military exercises organized by the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in 2026. The drills will also take place in Russia, Tajikistan, and Belarus, underscoring the collaborative security efforts within the bloc.
According to Lieutenant General Andrey Serdyukov, Chief of the CSTO Joint Staff, the approved plan for 2026 includes approximately 60 joint training events. These will encompass eight command-and-staff exercises and specialized drills designed to enhance operational readiness.
Kazakhstan's Role in the Drills
In September 2026, Kazakhstan's territory will host the "Rubezh" joint exercise. This drill will involve the collective rapid deployment forces of the Central Asian region, focusing on coordinated responses to security threats.
Multinational Exercises Across CSTO Nations
The exercise schedule extends across multiple member states. Russia will host the "Vzaimodeystviye" command-and-staff exercise with collective rapid reaction forces in September-October. Additionally, Russia will conduct the "Poisk" reconnaissance forces exercise and the "Echelon" logistics support exercise during the same period.
Tajikistan is slated to host the "Kobalt" and "Skala" special exercises in October. Meanwhile, Belarus will see the "Nerushimoye Bratstvo" command-and-staff exercise involving peacekeeping forces, alongside the "Baryer" special exercise focused on collective radiation, chemical, biological protection, and medical support.
Beyond these specific drills, a broader strategic command-and-staff exercise will be conducted. This overarching exercise aims to refine the application of all collective force components involved in the joint training events.
Observers from the Anti-Terrorism Center, the coordinating service of the CIS Border Troops commanders, and the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Secretariat are expected to be invited. The plans developed during these exercises will serve as a foundation for future joint training operations.
This extensive series of exercises highlights the CSTO's commitment to maintaining regional stability and enhancing the interoperability of its member states' armed forces.
