Kazakhstan's Capital Sees Price Hikes on Essential Foods

Astana, Kazakhstan – Residents of Kazakhstan's capital are facing continued price instability for essential food items, with significant increases observed in several key products. While some goods have seen minor price drops, the overall trend for many staples points towards rising costs.

Salt and Staple Goods See Price Jumps

Salt prices have notably increased, climbing from 81 tenge per kilogram in early February to 109 tenge. This surge is potentially linked to disruptions in supply from other producers.

Mixed Trends in Groceries and Grains

While many grocery items have maintained stable prices, changes within the flour category have led to a decrease. A two-kilogram bag of flour, previously costing at least 575 tenge, can now be purchased for 390 tenge from a different manufacturer. Black tea prices have also seen a reduction, with a 250g pack now priced at 1125 tenge, down from 1289 tenge.

Vegetable and Meat Prices on the Rise

Among socially important vegetables, only potatoes and cabbage have retained their previous prices, both costing 201 tenge per kilogram. Onions have become cheaper, with prices falling from 159 tenge to 151 tenge per kilogram.

However, carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, and apples have all experienced price increases. Carrots are now 197 tenge per kilogram (up from 182 tenge), tomatoes have risen to 1629 tenge per kilogram (from 995 tenge), cucumbers are priced at 2379 tenge per kilogram (up from 2049 tenge), and apples have increased to 695 tenge per kilogram (from 669 tenge).

In the meat sector, prices for beef brisket, chicken legs, and whole chickens have gone up. Beef brisket now costs 6990 tenge per kilogram (an increase from 6690 tenge), while frozen chicken is priced at 1745 tenge per kilogram (up from 1699 tenge), and chicken legs have reached 1799 tenge per kilogram.

Dairy Products Experience Inflation

The dairy category has seen widespread price hikes for most socially significant products. Only sour cream (918 tenge/kg) and butter (4945 tenge/kg) have maintained their prices. A carton of milk now costs between 385 and 420 tenge, and ayran has increased from 410 to 445 tenge. The price for a 200g pack of cottage cheese has surged from 379 tenge to 785 tenge, effectively raising the per-kilogram price from 1895 tenge to 2065 tenge. Packaged cheese in factory packaging (200g) has also become more expensive, rising from 1295 tenge to 1639 tenge.
