Kazakhstan's Highways Get Laser Guidance Systems to Boost Safety

Kazakhstan is rolling out innovative laser safety systems across 22 sections of its toll highways. This initiative aims to provide crucial guidance for drivers, particularly during nighttime or adverse weather conditions, with the ultimate goal of significantly reducing road traffic accidents.

Illuminating the Road Ahead

These systems feature special devices that project bright laser lines onto the road surface from above. They serve as an additional navigational aid, enhancing driver awareness and orientation. The proposal for this technology originated from the Department of Legal Statistics and Special Accounts for the Karaganda region.

Reducing Fatigue-Related Risks

According to KazAvtoZhol National Company, the primary function of these lasers is to mitigate the risks associated with driver fatigue and inattentiveness, which are common causes of accidents.

Strategic Placement on Key Routes

The laser guidance systems will be implemented on several key national routes. These include the Astana-Schuchinsk, Almaty-Khorgos, Shymkent-Taraz, and Oral-Russian Border highways, among others.

Enhancing Visibility and Reaction Time

Experts highlight that drivers often struggle with orientation during nighttime and periods of low visibility. The laser lines act as a vital visual cue, helping drivers maintain their course and react more swiftly to road conditions. International trials suggest that road sections equipped with these systems could see a reduction in accidents by as much as 40-50 percent.

Previous Trials Pave the Way

This isn't the first time such technology has been tested in Kazakhstan. A pilot project involving an active laser warning system was previously installed near the village of Oshagandy on the Astana-Temirtau highway in 2025.
