Sanzhar Aspandiyarov, First Kazakh Scholar at Sorbonne, Passes Away

The academic world is mourning the loss of Sanzhar Aspandiyarov, a distinguished Kazakh scientist and mathematician. Aspandiyarov achieved a significant milestone by becoming the first Kazakh national to defend a doctoral dissertation and subsequently teach at the renowned Sorbonne University in France.

While his profound contributions to science may not have received full recognition in his homeland, Aspandiyarov's expertise was highly sought after internationally, particularly in Europe. His passing marks the end of an era for Kazakh scholarship on the global stage.

A Leading Figure in Theoretical Probability

Aspandiyarov was a prolific author in the field of theoretical probability, leaving behind a substantial body of work. His intellectual prowess was recognized globally, earning him research grants that spanned from Japan to the United States. He was fluent in five languages, a testament to his broad engagement with the international scientific community.

Although he resided in London in his later years, Aspandiyarov was laid to rest in Almaty, fulfilling his final wishes. A joint research project with European mathematicians, where Aspandiyarov contributed two-thirds of the work, is slated for publication.

From a Family of Scholars

Born on February 10, 1968, Sanzhar Aspandiyarov hailed from a family deeply rooted in intellectual pursuits. His grandfather, Bial Aspandiyarov, was a historian, linguist, and educator. His father, Serik Bialuly Aspandiyarov, was a physicist renowned for his significant contributions to science, including the development of a high-pressure diamond chamber.

Aspandiyarov's exceptional intellect was evident from a young age. He graduated from Secondary School No. 56 in Almaty at just 14 years old and was featured in a documentary as a young mathematician at 15. After graduating with honors from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics at Moscow State University, he pursued doctoral studies at the prestigious École normale supérieure in France, culminating in his historic achievement at the Sorbonne.

Bridging Academia and Finance

Beyond his academic achievements, Aspandiyarov also applied his analytical skills in the corporate world. He held positions at prominent financial institutions such as Credit Suisse and Citigroup. In these roles, he was entrusted with tackling complex, non-standard problems, showcasing not only his deep professional knowledge but also his exceptional capacity for systematic and strategic thinking.
