Residents of Kazakhstan's two largest cities, Astana and Almaty, are set to experience dramatically different weather conditions in the coming days. While the capital, Astana, prepares for snow and blizzards, Almaty is expected to enjoy a noticeable spring warmth.

Astana's Winter Forecast

On March 6th, Astana will see variable cloudiness with snowfall expected overnight and light snow during the day. Fog and icy conditions are also predicted. The wind, initially from the southwest, will shift to the northwest, blowing at speeds of 9-14 m/s. Temperatures will range from -6 to -8 degrees Celsius overnight and -1 to -3 degrees Celsius during the day.

The following day, March 7th, Astana will experience snow overnight and precipitation (rain and snow) during the day. Fog and icy roads will persist. The southwest wind will strengthen, reaching 9-14 m/s with gusts up to 15-20 m/s. Overnight temperatures will be between -5 and -7 degrees Celsius, while daytime temperatures will hover around -1 to +1 degree Celsius.

By March 8th, Astana can expect variable cloudiness with intermittent precipitation (rain and snow), fog, and icy conditions. The southwest wind will continue at 9-14 m/s, with gusts up to 15-20 m/s. Overnight temperatures are forecast to be -1 to -3 degrees Celsius, with daytime temperatures reaching -1 to +1 degree Celsius.

Almaty's Spring Outlook

In contrast, Almaty will have variable cloudiness on March 6th, with intermittent precipitation (rain and snow) and a possibility of fog and icy conditions. The northeast wind will be light, at 3-8 m/s, with gusts up to 15 m/s. Overnight temperatures will be between -1 and +1 degree Celsius, and daytime temperatures will climb to +3 to +5 degrees Celsius.

March 7th in Almaty will also feature variable cloudiness, with precipitation primarily as rain overnight and during the day. Fog is expected at times. The northeast wind will remain at 3-8 m/s. Overnight temperatures will drop slightly to 0 to -2 degrees Celsius, but daytime temperatures will rise significantly to +7 to +9 degrees Celsius.

The warming trend will continue on March 8th, with Almaty experiencing variable cloudiness and no precipitation. Fog is anticipated during the night and early morning. The southwest wind will be light at 3-8 m/s. Overnight temperatures will be between 0 and +2 degrees Celsius, with a high of +10 to +12 degrees Celsius expected during the day.

Widespread Weather Changes Across Kazakhstan

These contrasting forecasts come as meteorologists previously warned of a northwest cyclone influencing Kazakhstan. Unstable weather is anticipated across many regions of the country, bringing precipitation in the form of rain and snow. Heavy rainfall and snow are expected in the southern and southeastern parts of the country on March 5th and 6th.
