Astana Launches Discounted LRT Travel Cards for Students and Vulnerable Residents
Astana is set to roll out personalized transport cards for its Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, with applications opening online from April 28. This initiative aims to provide more accessible and affordable travel options for specific resident groups.
Who Can Benefit from the New Cards?
According to City Transportation Systems (CTS), these specialized cards are designed for students aged 7 to 18 attending educational institutions in the capital. Additionally, citizens who fall under eligible discount categories, as defined by current legislation, will also be able to apply.
It's important to note that only registered residents of Astana who permanently reside in the city are eligible to apply for these cards.
How to Apply for Your Card
The application process will be exclusively online, managed through the official website transcard.kz. Applicants will need to complete the required fields, upload necessary documents in digital format, and select a convenient pick-up location for their card.
Once the card is ready, users will receive an SMS notification to their registered phone number.
Card Costs and Collection Points
The cost to produce each card is set at 1,200 tenge. Approved applicants can collect their ready cards from one of the designated district administration offices. A total of six collection points have been established across the capital to facilitate card distribution.
Important Usage Information
CTS has clarified that these new cards are strictly for use on the LRT system only. They will not be valid for travel on regular city buses or suburban routes. For other public transport options, passengers will need to use alternative payment methods.
Following the official launch of the LRT, transport cards and single-use tickets will be available for purchase at the stations. The city is also exploring alternative payment methods that do not require visiting a ticket counter, with further details to be announced.
This development comes as Astana Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek recently indicated that the LRT could commence operations within the next 2-3 weeks, signaling the project's nearing completion. Previously, it was confirmed that the Astana LRT would feature a closed payment system with turnstiles, functioning similarly to a metro system.
