Astana's Historic Right Bank Undergoing Major Transformation
Astana's historic right bank is set for a significant upgrade, promising a more comfortable and modern living environment for its residents. While the left bank is well-known, the city administration is now focusing on revitalizing the older, established areas.
Revitalizing the Right Bank
Following a directive issued in December 2025, extensive renovation work has commenced across the right bank. This initiative aims to modernize commercial, industrial, and residential zones, addressing long-standing concerns of local inhabitants.
Resident Perspectives
The comparison between Astana's two riverbanks is a frequent topic of discussion among residents. Some prefer the left bank for its abundance of shopping centers and retail outlets. Others, however, cherish the right bank for its greener spaces, tranquil atmosphere, and less congested streets, highlighting the convenience of its existing infrastructure.
City Leadership's Vision
According to Yelnar Bazyken, Director of Astana's Urban Center, infrastructure improvements are underway in all city districts. He acknowledged that while the left bank currently offers a higher quality of life, significant efforts are being made to develop the right bank. Residents can anticipate the addition of new public squares, expanded pedestrian walkways, and a new pedestrian bridge over the river.
New Development Projects
This year, renovation projects will span 173 areas across Astana. The right bank, in particular, will see the emergence of new public spaces, recreational zones, and essential infrastructure facilities.
Saryshagan District
In the Saryshagan district, new pedestrian and cycling paths have been established along the LRT line, accompanied by tree planting initiatives. Three major projects are also underway in the Millennium Alley area, including a theater square, a park near the train station, and an area around the "Nurly Zhol" station.
Almaty District
Several new public spaces are planned for the Almaty district. A new public square will be constructed at the intersection of Satpayev Street and Momyshuly Avenue. Momyshuly Avenue will also feature new greenery, seating areas, and bicycle lanes. Additionally, three new public squares will be created along Shakarim Kudaiberdiuly Avenue.
Baikonur District
The Baikonur district will also benefit from new recreational and leisure areas. Public squares are slated for development near the "Tulpar" shopping center, adjacent to School No. 119, on Pushkin Street, at the intersection of Kenesary and Pushkin streets, and at the intersection of Tarkhan and Zhubanov streets.
Saryarka District
In the Saryarka district, the Kzhymahan Munaittpasov Football Stadium has been commissioned. Two new public squares, "Chess Players" and "Footballers," will open near the stadium. Kenesary Street is also undergoing modernization, with wider pedestrian paths and modern street furniture being installed.
Work on Astana's right bank is ongoing, with expectations high that these areas will soon become more attractive and comfortable for residents.
