Public outcry has erupted over the state of restrooms at Astana's Nurly Zhol railway station, with images circulating online highlighting significant cleanliness issues. Passengers have shared their dissatisfaction, pointing to unhygienic conditions that detract from the travel experience.

Concerns Over Station Hygiene

Recent social media posts have brought attention to the sanitary conditions within the Nurly Zhol station's restrooms. Visual evidence shared by concerned citizens depicts stained granite countertops around sinks, accumulated dirt in corners and door frames, and discolored toilet bowls. These images have fueled public debate about the maintenance standards at a key transportation hub.

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy Responds

In response to the public's concerns, Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) has stated that restroom cleaning is conducted every 60 minutes. The company asserts that staff are equipped with necessary hygiene supplies, including toilet paper, liquid soap, and cleaning agents. KTZ representatives explained that the yellowing stains observed on the sinks are a result of material wear and tear exacerbated by water exposure.

Station Modernization Underway

KTZ has announced that renovation work has already commenced on the sanitary facilities at the Nurly Zhol station. The project aims to introduce a new design and utilize modern materials to enhance passenger comfort and the aesthetic appeal of the restrooms. This initiative is part of a broader plan to modernize the station's infrastructure.

Nationwide Station Overhaul Planned

Beyond the immediate upgrades at Nurly Zhol, KTZ has ambitious plans to renovate over 120 railway stations across Kazakhstan by the end of 2026. A significant portion of these, specifically 37 stations identified as being in a dilapidated state, will be demolished and replaced with new structures. This extensive program underscores a commitment to improving railway infrastructure nationwide.
