British Airways Flight Carries Deceased Passenger for 13 Hours
A disturbing situation occurred on a British Airways flight traveling between Hong Kong and London when a female passenger, estimated to be around 60 years old, passed away shortly after takeoff. Instead of diverting the flight, the crew opted to continue the journey to London.
Crew's Difficult Decision
The BA32 flight proceeded directly to Heathrow Airport without turning back. Aviation regulations stipulate that a passenger's death onboard is not classified as an emergency if they were already unwell when boarding. This technicality placed the crew in a challenging position regarding how to manage the situation.
Managing the Deceased Passenger
The crew faced the difficult task of deciding where to place the passenger's body. An initial suggestion to use a lavatory was reportedly not acted upon. Ultimately, the flight attendants wrapped the woman's body in a blanket and moved it to the rear of the aircraft. Unbeknownst to them, this area was a heated compartment, which complicated matters further.
Passenger and Crew Unease
As the plane neared its destination, passengers and crew began to notice an unpleasant odor emanating from the rear of the aircraft. This caused growing unease and alarm among those onboard.
Airport Investigation
Upon landing at Heathrow Airport, the aircraft was met by police. All 331 passengers and the crew were instructed to remain in their seats for approximately 45 minutes while authorities investigated the cause of death.
Impact on Crew
While no official complaints have been filed, the incident is reported to have had a significant emotional impact on the crew members. Some staff members reportedly took leave to recover psychologically.
