Dimash Kudaibergen's Mother Highlights Fading Kazakh Traditions
Svetlana Aitbayeva, the mother of internationally acclaimed singer Dimash Kudaibergen, has voiced concerns over the erosion of cherished Kazakh traditions. She specifically highlighted the deep significance of the historical custom of marrying off daughters at a young age, a practice she believes is fading away in contemporary society.
The Significance of Early Marriage Customs
Aitbayeva explained that the tradition of a daughter's departure before noon held profound meaning. It wasn't merely about time efficiency but also about allowing the young bride to adapt to her new environment and receive her parents' blessings before embarking on her new life.
"In the past, Kazakh girls were married off before noon. This had its own deep meaning. In recent years, a custom has emerged of seeing them off from a restaurant at midnight, perhaps as a measure to save time," she noted.
The 'Daughter as Guest' Tradition
She further elaborated on the tradition known as 'Kyz - Konak' (Daughter as Guest). The day after the wedding, a special feast would be prepared with a sacrificed sheep for the bride, groom, and the in-laws. This custom symbolized the daughter's return to her parental home as a guest, receiving special hospitality and blessings before departing for her husband's family.
"She would first arrive as a guest at her father's threshold, enjoy a special feast, and then depart for her own family. To ensure her future was bright, she would leave bathed in the morning light and sunbeams, receiving the blessings of her community," Aitbayeva shared.
Preserving Cultural Heritage
Emphasizing the importance of upholding these customs, Aitbayeva mentioned that she herself followed ancestral ways when marrying off her daughter, Raushantay. She underscored the significance of rituals such as the bride's female relatives receiving the 'korimdіk' (a gift for seeing the bride), the loading of the dowry onto camels, and the 'kuda tartar' (a playful exchange between in-laws), all accompanied by jokes and heartfelt blessings as the bride departed.
Aitbayeva's reflections have sparked considerable interest, with many readers sharing their thoughts and expressing support for the preservation of these valuable traditions.
