Drivers Ignore Road Closure Warnings, Cause Major Crash in Winter Storm

A serious road accident involving five cars occurred on the 98th kilometer of the Usharal-Dostyk highway in Kazakhstan's Zhetysu region. The incident highlights the dangers of drivers ignoring official warnings amidst severe winter weather conditions.

Accident Details Emerge

The crash happened around 1:30 PM today, according to KazAvtoZhol, the national road operator. Six individuals sustained injuries of varying degrees and were transported to the Alakol District Hospital in the Zhetysu region. At the time of the accident, the highway section was officially closed to all vehicle traffic due to adverse weather, including a blizzard and poor visibility.

Ignoring Official Warnings

KazAvtoZhol reported that the primary cause of the accident was drivers disregarding the established road closure and police checkpoints. These drivers opted to use unofficial detours, ultimately entering the closed section of the highway.

The road closure was initially implemented on February 13th at 12:00 PM. Weather forecasts indicated that the restrictions were planned to be lifted on February 17th at 9:00 AM, pending improved conditions.

A Plea for Driver Responsibility

Road authorities are urging drivers to strictly adhere to temporary restrictions and safety regulations. They emphasize that attempting to bypass closed sections using unmaintained routes is dangerous and prohibited. Drivers are advised to check road conditions and weather forecasts before embarking on journeys and to postpone long trips during blizzards and heavy snowfall.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of heeding official advisories to ensure personal safety and the safety of others on the road.
