Ekibastuz was struck by a severe dust storm and high winds on April 26th, causing widespread disruption and damage. Witnesses described the city being plunged into near darkness for several minutes, with some areas experiencing heavy rain amidst the tempest.
Widespread Damage Reported
The natural disaster resulted in fallen trees, flying roof sections from buildings, and damaged bus stop shelters. Power lines were also affected, leading to temporary outages in certain parts of the city. Mayor Ayana Beisekin confirmed that all municipal services have been mobilized to address the damage and restore normalcy.
Residents Advised to Stay Indoors
The strong winds are expected to persist, with a possibility of further intensification. City officials are urging residents to remain indoors and take necessary precautions. Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported in Ekibastuz as a result of the storm.
Storms Impact Neighboring Regions
The neighboring city of Pavlodar also experienced dust storms and rain. While no significant damage has been reported there yet, a storm warning remains in effect for the Pavlodar region, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 30 meters per second. In a separate incident related to the severe weather, a woman in the village of Aktogay sustained injuries when a piece of flying metal struck her. She was hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition.
