Epstein's Cellmate Reveals Contents of Financier's Final Note
A former cellmate of the late financier Jeffrey Epstein has come forward with details about a note Epstein allegedly penned before his death, a document that has remained largely secret. Nicholas Tartaglione, currently incarcerated in a U.S. federal detention center, claims to have seen the note left by Epstein shortly before his death in July 2019.
Epstein was found unresponsive in his cell, reportedly having used a bedsheet to attempt suicide. Although he survived this initial incident, he passed away a few weeks later. The official cause of death was later determined by a medical examiner to be suicide.
The Note's Content
Following the July incident, Epstein was moved to a special unit under close observation due to concerns about his mental state. According to Tartaglione, he witnessed Epstein hiding the note inside a graphic novel during this period. Tartaglione recounted that the note expressed a sense of futility, suggesting that investigators had spent months looking into Epstein's affairs and had found nothing substantial.
"Do I cry and say goodbye? It's time to say goodbye," Tartaglione paraphrased the note's sentiment.
Evidence for Defense
Tartaglione stated that he provided the note to Epstein's lawyers as evidence, should they need to argue that Epstein had attempted to harm himself.
Tartaglione, a former police officer, was himself sentenced in 2023 to four life sentences. He shared these details about the note in interviews conducted via phone from a federal prison in California.
Notably, the existence of this note was not mentioned in the official investigations into Epstein's death, including a 2023 report by the Justice Department's Inspector General. The newspaper reported that the note was sealed by a federal judge in connection with Tartaglione's criminal case, and remained unknown to Epstein's investigators.
