EU calls for peaceful transition in Venezuela, says Maduro lacks democratic mandate
The European Union set out its official position on Venezuela on January 4, 2026, urging respect for the country’s sovereignty and the will of its people while backing a peaceful, democratic transition — a stance with implications for regional stability and the rules-based order.
This was reported by Infohub.kz news agency.
EU outlines its position
In a statement released Sunday evening, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs Kaja Kallas said Nicolás Maduro “lacks legitimacy as a democratically elected president,” and stressed that any transfer of power must be peaceful and led by Venezuelans, with full respect for national sovereignty.
International law and major-power responsibility
The EU underscored that international law must be upheld in all circumstances. Kallas also pointed to the particular responsibility borne by the United States, as one of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, to adhere to and defend these principles.
Security concerns: crime and illicit drugs
The document additionally flags the need to combat transnational organized crime and illicit drug trafficking, while insisting that such efforts be conducted strictly in line with territorial integrity and state sovereignty.
What’s next
An emergency meeting of the UN Security Council on Venezuela has been announced amid rising tensions following disputed elections. Washington has warned Caracas of consequences if demands are ignored, adding to the pressure for a legal, negotiated path forward that reflects Venezuelans’ choices.
