A significant development has emerged from Russia's defense sector, with reports indicating the detention of Ruslan Tsalikov, a former first deputy minister of defense. The arrest is reportedly linked to a widening corruption investigation.

Allegations Against Tsalikov

While details are still emerging, Tsalikov may face charges related to embezzlement and money laundering, with as many as 12 such offenses cited. Additionally, allegations of bribery, involving two separate instances, are also being investigated.

Connection to Previous Cases

This detention is believed to be connected to the ongoing case of Timur Ivanov, another former deputy defense minister. Ivanov is currently facing charges of accepting bribes totaling 1.185 billion rubles (approximately $12.8 million USD) and embezzling over 4 billion rubles (over $43 million USD).

Tsalikov's Career Path

Ruslan Tsalikov had a long career in public service, holding various positions within the Ministry of Emergency Situations from 1994 to 2012. He later moved to the Ministry of Defense alongside Sergei Shoigu, overseeing legal affairs, financial oversight, and information policy. Following Shoigu's dismissal from his ministerial post, Tsalikov also departed from his role.

Wider Crackdown in Russian Military

Since 2024, the Russian Ministry of Defense has seen a series of high-profile arrests and dismissals, a phenomenon widely described by media as a "purge of generals." This crackdown intensified following the appointment of Andrei Belousov as the new defense minister in May. Approximately 10 generals have been detained on corruption charges, including former deputy ministers, an army commander, a deputy chief of the General Staff, and the head of the ministry's personnel department.
