The investigation into a fatal road traffic accident on Al-Farabi Avenue in Almaty is nearing its conclusion. The incident, which resulted in multiple fatalities, has been under intense scrutiny.

Investigation Update

According to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Sanjar Adil, nearly all necessary expert examinations for the criminal case have been completed. The Ministry of Internal Affairs leadership indicated that the investigation is in its final stages and is expected to be concluded within the next two weeks.

Tragic Sequence of Events

The accident occurred on the night of March 21st at the intersection of Al-Farabi Avenue and Mendykulov Street. A Zeekr vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane, colliding with a Mercedes. Tragically, the 29-year-old driver of the Mercedes and two passengers, aged 20 and 22, died at the scene. The driver of the Zeekr survived and was hospitalized. Subsequent tests revealed the driver was under the influence of alcohol at a mild level.

Involvement of Law Enforcement Officials

Following the incident, speculation arose on social media suggesting that street racing may have contributed to the crash. Some reports alleged the involvement of a high-ranking police official in the alleged race. In response to these claims, several police chiefs were dismissed from their positions.

Legal Proceedings

The Ministry of Internal Affairs confirmed that a criminal case has been initiated against the driver deemed responsible for the accident. This individual is currently being held in a pre-trial detention center awaiting further proceedings. The ministry has stated it will thoroughly investigate all information circulating in the media regarding the incident.
