Japan and UN Launch $3 Million Project to Save Caspian Sea
Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched a significant project to address the rapid decline of the Caspian Sea, a critical environmental issue impacting Kazakhstan and the wider region. The collaborative initiative is valued at $3 million USD.
This funding will be directed towards enhancing monitoring systems, improving water resource management, and establishing stringent controls over water levels. The project will be executed in close cooperation with Kazakhstan's Ministry of Ecology and Ministry of Water Resources.
Urgent Environmental Concerns
Ecologists have issued stark warnings regarding the precarious state of the Caspian Sea. Factors such as climate change, abnormally high temperatures, increased evaporation, and a drastic reduction in river inflows are causing this unique body of water to recede rapidly from its shores.
This environmental crisis poses a significant threat to the livelihoods of millions, the vital fishing industry, and the region's rich biodiversity, which includes over 400 endemic species.
Project Objectives
The primary focus for the investors and ministries involved will be to tackle several key challenges:
Official Statements
Kazakh officials acknowledge the urgent need for action. Murat Oshurbayev, Vice Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, stated, "The continuous decline in sea level has a complex and detrimental impact on the ecosystem, biodiversity, and the economic activities of the entire Caspian region."
Yasumasa Iijima, Japan's Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Kazakhstan, expressed pride in Tokyo's ability to support Astana in addressing this global challenge through advanced scientific technologies and international partnership.
Katarzyna Wawiernia, the Resident Representative of the UNDP in Kazakhstan, highlighted that the project will strengthen the adoption of crucial environmental decisions based on concrete data, aligning perfectly with the republic's national climate priorities.
This marks the fourth major project undertaken by Japan and the UN in Kazakhstan. The two parties are also collaborating on strengthening Kazakhstan's dams and hydraulic structures, as well as enhancing the resilience of its cities to natural disasters.
