Kazakhstan Bans Extravagant 'VIP Bouquets' and Cash Collections at School Events
Kazakhstan is tightening its grip on graduation ceremonies, introducing stricter measures against the practice of gifting expensive "VIP bouquets" and collecting cash. The Ministry of Education has declared these actions to be against regulations, aiming to curb ostentatious displays of wealth.
Ministry's Stance on Extravagance
The issue came to the forefront when Kazakhstan's Minister of Education, Zhyldyz Suleimenova, was questioned about potential actions against individuals gifting costly bouquets to graduates and teachers. Suleimenova recalled that the ministry, in collaboration with local executive bodies, signed a relevant order in May. This order specifically prohibits events held outside school premises, such as those in restaurants, and also imposes a general ban on cash collections.
Enforcement and Public Reaction
"Of course, you saw the videos from Almaty yesterday. Today, akimats, in conjunction with law enforcement agencies, will take strict measures in accordance with this order. The Ministry of Internal Affairs highlighted this issue in its report at the government meeting today. In general, public demand is aimed at preventing exaggeration. We have introduced orders and are taking measures," stated the minister.
The trend of elaborate floral arrangements, often referred to as "VIP bouquets," gained significant attention online. While previous years saw discussions about traffic violations by motorcades on May 25th, this year, the focus shifted to these oversized bouquets. Users on social media platforms noted how this practice quickly became a widespread phenomenon, sometimes leading to awkward situations.
One user on Threads, Dana Batyrgali, shared accounts of some schools allegedly requiring these bouquets, leading to pressure on students whose families could not afford them. Those who couldn't participate in the trend reportedly felt they were disrupting the overall festive atmosphere.
