The value of the US dollar has decreased in Kazakhstan, marking a significant shift in the country's financial landscape. On January 8, trading on the Kazakhstan Stock Exchange (KASE) concluded with the dollar's average rate at 508.91 tenge, reflecting a drop of 3.19 tenge from the previous day.
Market Dynamics
The official exchange rate set by the National Bank on January 8 was 512.83 tenge. In major cities like Almaty and Astana, exchange offices reported an average buying rate of 512.39 tenge and a selling rate of 515.60 tenge. Specifically, in Astana, the average buying rate was 509.00 tenge, while the selling rate stood at 516.00 tenge.
Strengthening of the Tenge
The decline in the dollar's value follows the National Bank's decision on November 28, 2025, to maintain the base interest rate at 18 percent. According to National Bank Chairman Timur Suleimenov, the strengthening of the tenge is attributed to increased domestic market activity and the influx of substantial portfolio investments.
