Kazakhstan to Launch Production of High-Quality Anthracite Coal
Kazakhstan is set to commence the extraction of high-quality anthracite coal, a rare and valuable resource within the country. The Sarqym deposit, located near the city of Balkhash in the Karaganda region, is slated for coal production over a 25-year period.
Unique Properties of Sarqym Coal
Anthracite is scarce in Kazakhstan, but its high calorific value and heat-generating properties make it a prized raw material. It is essential for the metallurgical industry and serves as a key component in the production of absorbents, electrodes, electrocorundum, and microphone powder. Lower-grade coal from the deposit will be utilized for domestic needs in Balkhash and surrounding areas.
Global Anthracite Extraction Methods
Globally, anthracite is typically mined through deep shaft methods. However, the Sarqym deposit will employ an open-pit mining technique, likely due to the deposit's complex geological structure. Documents indicate that Sarqym coal has an average ash content exceeding 42%, but it can be enriched and processed into a concentrate.
Production Outlook
The extraction plan forecasts the production of 20.01 million tons of coal between 2025 and 2050. The total reserves are estimated at 170.63 million tons. Production volumes are expected to ramp up to 1 million tons per year by 2035 and maintain this level until 2048, before tapering off to 500,000 tons by 2050.
Previously, a legal dispute occurred between a ministry and Sarqym Group LLP concerning breaches of contract terms related to the Sarqym deposit.
