Kazakhstan to Scrutinize Foreign Artists' Concerts Under New Law
Kazakhstan is implementing new regulations that will place foreign artists' concert content and song repertoires under the watchful eye of local authorities. This move, formalized by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev signing a new law, aims to ensure performances align with national values and avoid prohibited themes.
New Approval Process for Concerts
Under the updated legislation, organizers planning concerts by international artists must now secure approval from local akimats (municipal administrations) at least 30 working days before the event. This process involves submitting the planned repertoire and content for review.
Safeguarding National Values
The new rules stipulate that any concert program found to contain prohibited themes, promote pornography, or advocate drug use will be subject to cancellation or prohibition. This initiative is designed to protect the nation's cultural heritage and prevent the dissemination of content deemed harmful or inappropriate.
Addressing Previous Loopholes
Previously, foreign artists enjoyed considerable freedom in organizing concerts in Kazakhstan, sometimes securing venues and selling tickets independently without extensive oversight. Yevgeniy Kochetov, the former Vice Minister of Culture and Information, had highlighted this lack of stringent control. The new regulations are intended to bring order to this process, increase organizer accountability, and ensure that contracts clearly outline the specific songs an artist will perform.
