Kazakhstan Warns Parents: Teenagers Targeted in Sophisticated Fraud Schemes

Kazakhstan's Ministry of Internal Affairs has issued a stern warning to citizens, particularly parents, regarding a disturbing trend: the exploitation of teenagers in sophisticated fraud schemes. Authorities are urging the public to remain alert to the potential misuse of social media and messenger accounts for criminal purposes.

Teenagers Becoming New Targets for Scammers

Recent reports indicate a significant rise in fraudsters actively recruiting minors into their criminal operations. These scammers often lure teenagers with promises of financial rewards, convincing them to register SIM cards and create social media accounts. These accounts are then subsequently used to deceive other citizens.

Potential Criminal Liability for Minors

Police officials emphasize that participating in such activities, even unknowingly, can lead to criminal liability as aiding and abetting a crime. Beibit Birzhanov, head of the department at the Ministry of Internal Affairs' Cybercrime Prevention Department, stated, "In the age of information technology, accounts on social networks and messengers can be used as tools for fraud and other illegal activities. According to the legislation of the Republic of Kazakhstan, such actions are considered complicity in a crime."

The Ministry advises citizens to be cautious about sharing personal information and to educate younger family members about the risks associated with online activities and unsolicited offers.
