Kazhydromet warns of Jan 5 blizzards across Kazakhstan, winds up to 23 m/s
Storm warnings are in effect across much of Kazakhstan for Monday, 5 January, as the national forecaster Kazhydromet predicts a mix of snow, blizzard conditions, fog and icy roads, with wind gusts reaching 15–23 m/s in places. The hazardous weather could reduce visibility and complicate travel on major routes.

Where conditions may be toughest
Abai Region, including Semey, is expected to see snow, blowing snow, fog and ice overnight and in the morning, with gusts in Zharma District up to 23 m/s.
In Akmola Region, snow and drifting snow are forecast at night and during the day; in Kokshetau, a southwesterly wind could strengthen to 15–20 m/s in the morning and daytime.
Aktobe Region faces night-time snow and ice, turning to mixed rain and snow with blowing snow in western and northern areas during the day; winds in Aktobe city may reach 15–18 m/s.
Atyrau Region is set for fog and ice, with winds in the north and east intensifying to 15–20 m/s during the day.
East Kazakhstan Region (Oskemen) should prepare for snow, blizzard conditions and ice, with 15–20 m/s gusts in northern and eastern districts.
In West Kazakhstan Region (Oral/Uralsk), rain changing to snow is expected from night, alongside blizzard conditions, ice and fog, with daytime winds of 15–20 m/s.

Shymkent and Turkistan Region: fog, with winds on mountain passes up to 15–20 m/s.
Zhambyl Region: gusts around 15–20 m/s in mountainous areas.
Travel and safety guidance
Drivers should slow down on icy stretches, increase following distance and use low beams in fog. Before long trips, check current road conditions and any potential closures, especially on border-adjacent sections. Air travelers are advised to monitor flight status updates frequently.
