Mediterranean Sea Faces Increased Tsunami Risk in Coming Decades, Experts Warn

Scientists are sounding the alarm about the potential for significant tsunami events in the Mediterranean Sea in the coming decades. While often perceived as a tranquil body of water, the region's geological activity presents a tangible risk.

Since the early 20th century, approximately 100 tsunamis have been recorded in and around the Mediterranean, accounting for about 10% of all documented tsunami events globally. This statistic underscores the region's vulnerability.

Rising Tsunami Threat

According to UNESCO, there is a 100% certainty that at least one tsunami with a wave height of one meter or more will occur in the Mediterranean within the next 30 to 50 years. This prediction highlights the urgent need for preparedness.

Understanding Tsunami Causes and Dangers

Tsunamis are typically triggered by underwater earthquakes or volcanic eruptions and often consist of multiple waves. Experts caution that the first wave is not always the largest, and powerful currents can pose a significant danger. These currents can inundate coastal areas and catch people by surprise, even far from the immediate shoreline.

Regional Risk Assessment

The eastern Mediterranean, encompassing areas like Greece, Turkey, and Italy, faces the highest risk due to intense tectonic activity. The central Mediterranean experiences a moderate risk, while the western parts, including Spain and France, have a lower but still present danger.

All countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea participate in UNESCO's Joint Tsunami Warning System for the Mediterranean (NEAMTWS), a crucial initiative for early detection and public safety.
