Mexico Drug Lord 'El Mencho' Laid to Rest in Lavish Gold Coffin Ceremony
The funeral of a high-profile figure in Mexico's illicit drug trade, Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known by his alias 'El Mencho' and as the leader of the Jalisco New Generation (CJNG) cartel, was marked by an extraordinary display. Cervantes was transported to his final resting place in a specially adorned gold-plated coffin.
A Solemn Procession Under Heavy Guard
The somber procession took place on March 2nd, moving from a funeral home in Guadalajara to the 'Resinto de la Paz' cemetery. Reports and media coverage captured images of the gleaming gold coffin atop the hearse. Despite the ceremony being held privately, media representatives managed to document the striking visual of the coffin.
Security Measures Reflect Cartel's Influence
The cemetery grounds were under strict surveillance by local and federal law enforcement. Armored military vehicles were deployed, and checkpoints were established along the route of the hearse. These extensive security measures underscore the significant influence wielded by the drug cartel and the prevailing security concerns in the region.
An Unusual Final Resting Place
Interestingly, the cemetery where 'El Mencho' was interred is not typically known for ostentatious funerals. It lacks grand mausoleums or elaborate tombs. However, it is notable that some relatives of Rafael Caro Quintero, the founder of the former Guadalajara Cartel, are buried here. Quintero was convicted for the murder of a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent in 1985.
The Cartel Leader's Capture and Demise
Ruben Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes was apprehended by Mexican security forces on February 22nd following a confrontation. He reportedly died in the hospital due to injuries sustained during his capture. His arrest triggered widespread unrest across the country, including the closure of highways and the arson of vehicles and businesses.
