Mummy Case: 6-Year-Old Girl Found with Deceased Parents Begins New Life

In a deeply unsettling case from the village of Maikain in the Pavlodar region of Kazakhstan, a 6-year-old girl has been placed in a support center after being discovered living in a home with the mummified bodies of her parents.

The grim discovery was made in February of this year when authorities, alerted by medical personnel concerned about a family member's prolonged absence from treatment, attempted to enter two private residences. They found the mummified remains of a young woman and her elderly father.

A Child's Resilience

One of the homes housed the elderly grandmother, the 6-year-old girl, and her older sister. Following the discovery, a criminal case was initiated, and the homeowner and her daughter were taken to the police department for questioning and necessary examinations. Reports indicate that the girl's grandmother and older sister are currently receiving treatment at the Pavlodar Regional Center for Mental Health.

The young girl was admitted to a local hospital, where it was determined she had not received any vaccinations since birth. Disturbing images later surfaced on social media, reportedly showing toys placed near the mummified body of the girl's mother, adding a layer of tragedy to the already horrific situation.

While the child was hospitalized, relatives assisted with the burial of her mother and grandfather. Inscriptions on the gravestones indicate the mother, aged 39, passed away on February 7, 2024, and her father, aged 67, died on September 22, 2025, suggesting the father's death occurred after the mother's.

A New Beginning

For over a week now, the young girl has been residing at the "Umit" Children's Support Center in Ekibastuz. Saule Shakenova, the regional ombudsperson for children's rights, recently visited the center.

"The children immediately welcomed her with warmth and care, making her feel accepted, expected, and like she belonged," Shakenova reported. "Yes, the children, with their understanding, day by day, step by step, found a way to her little heart and built trust."

According to Shakenova, the girl uses language beyond her years, a reflection of her upbringing. "The girl is very active and intelligent. Because she lived with adults, her manner of speech is also appropriate. She uses phrases not typical for her age, such as 'this is foolishness' or 'it's not time yet.' We haven't told the children about what happened yet. Now she is curious about everything, constantly asks questions, can count, and knows all the letters. She has also found her favorite toys and friends," the children's ombudsperson noted.

The girl is scheduled to begin attending a pre-school preparation class in Ekibastuz in April.

Unanswered Questions

The Pavlodar Regional Health Department has yet to provide an explanation as to why the young girl was not noticed by medical professionals. It remains unclear why doctors did not inquire about the condition of her seriously ill mother. Residents of Maikain claim the woman was diagnosed with cancer after the daughter's birth and was prescribed treatment.

This story continues to unfold as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths and the prolonged period the child spent with the deceased.
