Poets' SMS Duel Resurfaces, Sparking Online Debate

A decade-old written duel between prominent Kazakh poets Zhursin Erman and Bauyrzhan Khaliolla has resurfaced online, capturing widespread attention and sparking a heated debate among the public.

The Genesis of the Dispute

According to Bauyrzhan Khaliolla, the exchange began in 2011 following Zhursin Erman's victory as the grand prize winner at a poetry competition honoring Mukagali Makatayev's 80th birthday. Khaliolla initially penned congratulatory verses for his mentor.

"Makatayev, is it fate or destiny? Congratulations, pour out your kumis for the people. Tomorrow, we too will be competing, for the Zhursin Erman prize," Khaliolla wrote.

Erman's Provocative Reply

However, Zhursin Erman's response took the poet by surprise. Erman replied:

"One must know their own height, like a whip's lash. The Zhursin Erman prize, I am against its being awarded to drunkards," he wrote.

Khaliolla interpreted this response as a jab related to his previous poetic works. Angered, he fired back with his own verses:

"I learned from you how to gulp, then I became disliked by the people. Alas, my precious life, from where did you find such scoundrels to be my teacher? Was this your last word to me? I will no longer hold my dombra before you. For one drunkard to receive a prize, it is a great sin to mock another drunkard..."

The Re-emergence and Discussion

Bauyrzhan Khaliolla noted that this correspondence has its own history. When Zhursin Erman later wrote an article for the "Zhas Alash" newspaper, he reportedly published these text messages with cultural sensitivity, altering the word "drunkard" to "drinker." Despite this, Erman has been seen promoting these messages.

Currently, these exchanges have reappeared on social media, becoming a focal point of public discussion and analysis.
