Qarmet Steel Plant Revitalizes Key Forge and Press Workshop
The Qarmet metallurgical plant in Temirtau is on the cusp of completing a significant restoration of its forge and press workshop, a vital component of the enterprise's technical infrastructure. This modernization effort is part of a broader program to revitalize the plant's operations.
Once operational, the workshop will be instrumental in meeting the plant's internal demands. It will be responsible for producing specialized elements, parts, and individual components for equipment during repair and maintenance, thereby reducing reliance on external suppliers.
Workshop History and Restoration
According to the press service of Qarmet, the workshop's operations were halted in 2019 due to the critical condition of its roof panels and wall structures. The facility remained idle for several years before demolition work commenced in 2024. The active construction and restoration phase began in 2025.
Company representatives detailed the extensive work undertaken: "A significant volume of work has been completed. The roof has been completely replaced, modern lightweight skylights have been installed, new wall panels have been erected, and individual structural elements have been reinforced. Based on testing, a decision was made to preserve some concrete columns – they have been banded and strengthened with a metal frame. Window structures have also been replaced."
While the building retains its core structural characteristics, it has been considerably lightened and modernized. The use of new materials in place of heavy concrete roof and wall panels is expected to enhance the facility's reliability and simplify future operations and maintenance.
Production Significance and Future Outlook
Currently, landscaping work is underway in the adjacent areas, and the internal infrastructure of the workshop is being prepared. This includes upgrading engineering networks, replacing overhead cranes, and modernizing electrical, plumbing, and heating systems. New, state-of-the-art equipment is expected to arrive at the plant soon.
Qarmet emphasized the critical importance of restoring the forge and press workshop. "Currently, we are forced to outsource some of the necessary work. Once the workshop is operational again, Qarmet will be able to independently produce the required parts and elements for internal repairs and equipment maintenance," stated company management.
The forge and press workshop is slated to be fully operational by the end of this year. Qarmet views this project as an example of its renewed approach to modernization, focusing on comprehensive restoration of production facilities to enhance their reliability, safety, and efficiency for the long term, rather than settling for temporary solutions.
